Pursuing a PhD or MPhil in Modern Languages allows you to embark on an extensive research project driven by your personal interests and academic passions. These prestigious degrees can open doors to academic careers or expand professional opportunities in education, government, and private industries. The full-time PhD program spans three years (six years part-time), while the MPhil requires two years of full-time study (four years part-time). Candidates submit a thesis of up to 100,000 words for PhD evaluation or 60,000 words for MPhil assessment, showcasing substantial scholarly contributions to the field, followed by an oral defense (viva voce examination). Both programs involve original research under faculty supervision, resulting in a thesis that advances modern language studies. Swansea's Modern Languages department covers Arabic, Mandarin-Chinese, French, German, and Hispanic Studies, with research expertise spanning medieval literature to contemporary European cinema.

Throughout your research, you'll receive dedicated guidance from two expert supervisors, beginning with biweekly meetings in your first term and continuing at scheduled intervals. The program helps refine advanced research skills in modern languages, supplemented by campus training initiatives. You'll also gain presentation experience through departmental seminars and the College of Arts and Humanities Postgraduate conference.
