The Dental Public Health and Health Services research team specializes in studies aimed at: enhancing and safeguarding oral health for both individuals and communities
evaluating the direction, efficiency, and fairness of oral healthcare systems, both within the UK and internationally. Comprising a diverse, highly skilled team with expertise in both quantitative and qualitative research methods, the group has undertaken significant projects. One notable example is the FiCTION randomized controlled trial conducted across UK primary dental care settings, which brought together collaborators from numerous UK dental schools under the leadership of Professors Gail Douglas (Leeds), Janet Clarkson, Nicola Innes (Dundee), and Anne Maguire (Newcastle). This trial compared three treatment strategies for managing tooth decay in primary teeth among children at high risk of caries. Funded by the NIHR, its findings are expected to shape future dental policies. Additionally, the group collaborates with Public Health England (PHE) on research initiatives and policy guidance.
