Pursuing a research degree in the Faculty of Biological Sciences allows you to cultivate expertise as an autonomous investigator in your selected discipline. Guided by your principal supervisor and additional co-supervisors, you'll conduct pioneering investigations into specific biological challenges while joining a vibrant research network employing cross-disciplinary methods to address contemporary scientific inquiries. During your doctoral studies, you'll not only deepen your specialized knowledge but also enhance your capabilities through structured training initiatives, seminar participation, and conference engagements.
Our cellular biology investigations focus on elucidating the molecular and cellular processes governing both healthy cellular operations and their pathological alterations. Specifically, we explore the architecture and operations of cellular elements like membranes, organelles, and cytoskeletal structures, along with fundamental processes including protein homeostasis, stress adaptation, genetic control mechanisms, and secretory pathways in normal and diseased states. These investigations utilize diverse model organisms ranging from cultured mammalian cells to plants, nematodes, and Drosophila, employing methodologies spanning molecular biology, functional genomics, and sophisticated imaging technologies such as Confocal Microscopy, Super-resolution Microscopy, and Cryo-Electron Microscopy.
