The South West Biosciences Doctoral Training Partnership (SWBio DTP) is coordinated by the University of Bristol in collaboration with the Universities of Bath, Cardiff, and Exeter, as well as Rothamsted Research. The initiative additionally involves key partners such as the Marine Biological Association (MBA), Plymouth Marine Laboratory (PML), Swansea University, UCB Pharma, the University of the West of England (UWE), and SETsquared Bristol.
These organizations form a unique collective of bioscience researchers and students, boasting well-established global, national, and local connections along with widely acknowledged research excellence. As pioneers in our field, we have a proven history of driving innovation through top-tier research and education, working closely with both industry and government bodies.
The program specifically focuses on delivering exceptional cross-disciplinary research training across these key areas:
pushing the boundaries of bioscience exploration,
bioscience supporting sustainable agriculture and food systems,
bioscience for holistic health understanding.
This training is further enhanced by cutting-edge technologies, enabling you to push the limits of your research through novel methodologies, tools, and techniques.
You'll join a comprehensive, interdisciplinary research project guided by a diverse team of supervisors, with numerous cross-institutional PhD opportunities that leverage each partner's specialized knowledge. Additional possibilities include:
applying your research in commercial environments through our industry-linked projects (DTP CASE studentships),
conducting joint research with our core and partner institutions (Standard DTP studentships with collaborative partners).
Certain projects may also involve collaboration with other national or international researchers, along with potential fieldwork experiences.
