The journey as a doctoral candidate presents significant challenges but offers immense personal and professional fulfillment. Much like people, infrastructure inevitably deteriorates with time. Visible signs of aging - from crumbling road surfaces to rusting bridge supports - demonstrate how our constructed surroundings often fall short of expectations. Interestingly, though new projects dominate media attention, approximately 50% of the UK's yearly construction expenditure goes toward maintaining and repairing existing structures. To guarantee our built environment remains functional for the coming century, we must carefully select materials that not only meet current needs but will continue performing well beyond their expected service life.
