The MSc in Civil Engineering provides two tracks: a broad curriculum for those transitioning into civil engineering or expanding their expertise, and a 'sustainable pathways' specialization for students with prior civil engineering background.
Program Overview
Our program features a flexible MSc in Civil Engineering where you can customize your studies through elective courses. Alternatively, you can pursue one of two sustainability-focused specializations:
Sustainable Structural & Geotechnical Engineering
Sustainable Water Resources & Environmental Systems
These pathways provide unique opportunities to participate in industry-sponsored design projects and collaborate with professionals on your dissertation research.
Comparing Program Options
All students complete the core 'Civil Engineering Design Projects' course, working on practical challenges like renewable energy initiatives. Sustainability pathway students gain access to specialized industry projects, developing integrated solutions across structural, geotechnical, and water engineering disciplines with consideration for environmental and economic factors.
Both program options include the essential 'Qualitative & Quantitative Research Methods' course to prepare for dissertation work. General track students can select from extensive elective offerings (60 credits from List A plus 30 credits from List A/B), while pathway students focus their studies on either structural/geotechnical or water/environmental sustainability themes, with corresponding industry collaboration opportunities.
Following coursework completion, all students undertake a significant research dissertation.
Industry Partnerships
Through our 'Independent Study in Collaboration with Industry' course, students may work directly with industry partners. Pathway participants can pursue dissertation projects co-supervised by industry professionals.
Professional Recognition
This program holds accreditation from:
Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE)
Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE)
Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation (CIHT)
Institute of Highway Engineers (IHE)
Career Prospects:
Graduates enjoy excellent global career prospects across diverse sectors including:
Engineering consulting firms (project planning and design)
Construction management (site supervision)
Public sector roles (municipalities and utilities)
Energy and resource industries (oil & gas, mining, renewable energy infrastructure)
Program Duration: 12 months full-time; 24 or 36 months part-time options
