Tribology, the science of interacting moving surfaces, encompasses friction, wear, lubrication, and increasingly examines surface adhesion and static surface modifications. This field profoundly impacts daily life by influencing economic, environmental, and performance factors in both natural and engineered systems. Our research spans multiple engineering applications through core tribotechnology themes. UCLan specializes in: Tribotronics (active tribology), Bio-tribology, Condition monitoring, Fluid film technology, Surface metrology, Surface modification. Housed in the Jost Institute for Tribotechnology, researchers utilize advanced surface characterization tools, friction/wear testing equipment, and lubrication analysis systems while collaborating with international laboratories to pioneer innovative studies.

A recognised UK first degree, second class honours or above; or a UK Master’s degree or equivalent qualification. PhD studentships normally require at least an upper second class honours first degree. IELTS - 6.5 (with no component score lower than 6.0), TOEFL IBT - 86 with minimum grades of Reading - 15, Listening - 15, Speaking - 18, Writing - 22, Pearson Test of English-Academic - 65 and with minimum of 59 in each component
