The School of Engineering and Materials Science boasts a dynamic and accomplished research community with multiple specialized research centers. Engineering at Queen Mary has maintained an esteemed legacy in both education and research since the early 20th century, while Materials Science research at our institution predates all other UK establishments. Currently, research within the School benefits from state-of-the-art laboratory equipment and comprehensive computational resources. Our world-class academics actively collaborate across diverse research disciplines, fostering innovation. These cutting-edge discoveries are integrated into our curriculum, ensuring students acquire contemporary knowledge and skills that prepare them for professional success. Full-time programs typically span three to four years, while part-time options extend to six or seven years.
Requirements for each PhD project vary but generally we are looking for applicants who hold, or expect to receive:
 
IELTS (Academic) minimum score 6.5 overall with 6.0 in each of Writing, Listening, Reading and Speaking.  TOEFL minimum score 92 overall with 21 in Writing, 19 in Reading, 18 in Listening and 21 in Speaking.
