Earning a PhD in Hispanic Studies allows you to conduct extensive supervised research that offers novel insights worthy of academic publication.
Program Highlights
A doctoral degree, commonly referred to as a PhD, is essential for academic or research careers. Beyond academia, employers increasingly value this qualification, acknowledging the dedication, specialized skills, and advanced research capabilities it represents. PhD holders demonstrate exceptional analytical rigor, project management, and communication expertise.
Throughout the program, you'll develop an original research project (up to 100,000 words) in either English or Spanish. Current doctoral candidates are exploring diverse topics including Spanish cinema regulations, modern Spanish film movements, and Peru's sterilization policies during Fujimori's regime. Past dissertations have examined cultural translation challenges in Catalan cinema.
Our department specializes in two primary research domains: Peninsular Studies (Spain) and Latin American Studies. Key focus areas include Spanish subcultures and mass media, Andean political evolution post-colonialism, military influences in modern South America, 20th-21st century Caribbean studies, and how tourism and national branding intersect with cultural identity formation.
