Our Portuguese Studies PhD program offers the opportunity to conduct groundbreaking research under the guidance of our expert faculty. The Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies department at Manchester holds a prominent position in both national and international research communities, demonstrated through our scholarly publications, seminar programs, conference participation, and pioneering approaches to disciplinary boundaries.

Our research and postgraduate teaching spans from Early Modern Spain and Latin America to contemporary topics, including urban studies, race and indigenous cultures, modern Iberian literature and media, as well as 20th and 21st-century Latin American creative works across various mediums.

Faculty research and supervision areas encompass cultural theory, literary history, musicology, memory studies, historical analysis, and urban cultural studies.

Specializations include Brazilian/Portuguese Studies, Gender and Cultural Studies, Film Theory, Historical Research, Latin American Arts and Literature, and Critical Textual Analysis.

Qualification Requirements

Students need to have: Bachelors (Honours) degree (or overseas equivalent) at 2:1 level or above in a cognate subject; Master's degree at 65% overall average with minimum 65% in dissertation and with no mark below 55% (or its international equivalent) in a related subject. Students whose first language is not English require one of the following: an overall IELTS score of 7.0 with 7.0 in the writing component, or a TOEFL score of 600 paper-based test or 100 internet-based test, or a Pearson Test of English (PTE) score of 70 overall with 70 in the writing component, or an overall Trinity Integrated Skills in English (ISE) III grade of Merit with Merit in the writing component.
