The Centre provides outstanding opportunities for both full-time and part-time research in intellectual disability and community care, leading to advanced degrees. With a proven history of securing University and ESRC research studentships, the Tizard Centre operates within the School of Social Policy, Sociology and Social Research (SSPSSR). It maintains strong connections with health and social care organizations, along with other related institutions. Recognized as a leader in autism, intellectual disability, and community care research, the Centre was honored with a Queen's Anniversary Prize in 2013 for its exceptional contributions in these fields.
Our postgraduate programs deliver comprehensive knowledge about intellectual and developmental disabilities. Graduates develop a deep understanding of issues affecting this population and acquire skills to analyze and conduct pertinent research. These courses enhance career prospects for both experienced professionals and newcomers to the field. Many participants already hold professional, managerial, or support positions working with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, using our programs to further their professional growth and career progression. Meanwhile, those starting their careers often transition into various health and social care roles, such as learning disability psychologists, behavioral specialists in community teams, service managers, clinical psychology trainees, or PhD candidates.
