Hull's Film Studies program is an innovative academic department that provides PhD opportunities across diverse areas such as television studies, American film, animation, horror genres, and adaptation research. Our doctoral candidates work closely with distinguished faculty members who are leaders in their respective fields. Faculty members regularly participate in film-related media broadcasts and have presented at prestigious venues including the National Film Theatre and universities throughout Europe and North America.
The department organizes ongoing film and media research seminars and previously hosted an international conference commemorating Ealing Studios' 75th anniversary. A £9.5 million renovation has transformed Middleton Hall into a premier cultural venue featuring cutting-edge cinema technology with immersive surround sound. This upgrade provides Hull with exceptional facilities, including a high-tech cinema, concert hall, ambisonic studio, and professional-grade recording spaces. The redesigned complex features a new entrance and café, with the 400-seat cinema and concert hall as its focal point. This adaptable venue perfectly accommodates film screenings, musical performances, and theatrical productions.
