Modern media surrounds us constantly, from our smartphones to our nightstands and educational spaces, as media platforms and usage extend far beyond traditional home televisions and desktop computers. Doctoral candidates undertake a self-directed research initiative with support from an advisory team. The maximum enrollment duration allowed prior to submitting a thesis is 4 years for full-time students or 7 years for those studying part-time or remotely. Typically, hands-on research activities (encompassing experiments, lab work, field studies, and data gathering) span 3 to 3.5 years for full-time students or 6 to 6.5 years for part-time or distance learners. After completing active research, students may apply for a writing-up phase lasting up to one year. The combined duration of active research and writing must not surpass the total registration limit. Theses generally should not exceed 80,000 words and must demonstrate novel scholarly contributions with publishable-quality work. Finally, candidates must successfully defend their thesis in an oral examination (viva voce) to earn their degree.
