Hull's Film Studies program is an innovative academic department that provides PhD opportunities across diverse areas such as television studies, American film, animation, horror genres, and adaptation research. Our doctoral candidates receive guidance from leading specialists who frequently appear in film-related media broadcasts and have presented at prestigious venues like the National Film Theatre and universities worldwide.
The department organizes ongoing film and media research seminars and previously hosted a major international conference commemorating Ealing Studios' 75th anniversary. A recent £9.5 million upgrade transformed Middleton Hall into a premier cultural complex featuring cutting-edge cinema technology with immersive audio. This investment provides Hull with exceptional facilities including a surround-sound theater, performance hall, ambisonic studio, and professional-grade recording spaces. The renovation features a modern entrance and café, with the 400+ capacity cinema and concert venue as its focal point. Qualification Requirements
You should normally have, or expect to obtain, at least 2:1 Honours degree (or international equivalent) in a relevant subject or related Arts or Humanities subject.
You should submit a sample of your written work in the relevant subject of at least 4000 words (for MA by Research) and at least 10,000 words (for PhD).
With your application, you should also submit a research proposal that should be tailored to your research area and should include the following-
project title,
project synopsis (of c. 500 words),
series of research questions,
discussion of research context,
consideration of the research methods and methodology to be employed,
bibliography
Research proposals should not exceed 1500 words in length (excluding bibliography).
IELTS 6.0 overall, with no less than 5.5 in each skill.
TOEFL iBT - 78 overall with at least - Reading 10, Listening 9, Speaking 17, Writing 19.
