The Film Studies Department at King's stands as one of London's premier institutions for cinema education. Our faculty boasts global recognition in key research fields including: European and American film (both mainstream and avant-garde), global cinema (with emphasis on East Asian), cultural studies, and film theory. Students can pursue a collaborative PhD program with either Hong Kong University or the National University of Singapore.

Faculty research and publications explore diverse cinematic traditions, covering European popular genres and stars, art films, documentaries, and experimental works. Our cultural studies approach examines broader cinematic landscapes (including American and Asian films alongside European), investigating themes like national/transnational identity, gender and ethnicity, urban depictions, film music, and digital media. Theoretical research explores connections between cinema and other fields such as philosophy, psychology, literary studies, geography, and visual arts.
