A Master of Arts (MA) by Research enables students to pursue a one-year full-time or two-year part-time research program with minimal structured coursework. This format provides an opportunity to investigate a research subject in less time than a comprehensive PhD program.
Our research degrees offer flexible study options, including full-time, part-time, and select distance learning pathways.
Unlike taught Master's programs, research Master's candidates focus on a specialized project with significantly more autonomy in their academic work.
Students collaborate with their supervisor during the initial study period to establish an approved research plan. Throughout the project, participants enhance their research capabilities through specialized training sessions and academic events.
Each candidate is assigned a primary supervisor, typically supported by a team of up to three advisors to provide project guidance.
Upon completion, students document their research outcomes in a concise thesis of approximately 25,000 words for examination. The program also welcomes practice-based projects involving portfolio submissions, which may combine practical work with written analysis. The supervisory team advises on the appropriate balance between practical and written components.
