The MA Pathway in Renaissance and 18th-Century Literature connects two of the most vibrant eras in English literary history, inviting you to explore their continuities and contrasts. This program examines works by influential figures like Shakespeare, Marlowe, Cavendish, Pope, Swift, Behn, and Equiano, while exploring themes such as literature's response to social and political changes—including global exploration, slavery, and colonial expansion (with particular attention to Liverpool's historical role). You'll study the evolution from Renaissance alchemy to modern science, stylistic debates across both periods, the craft of scholarly editing, and Shakespeare's enduring influence on later adaptations.
Leveraging the Department's strong research focus in these literary periods, the pathway includes visits to cultural landmarks like the Walker Art Gallery and International Slavery Museum.
Engagement with peers and scholars through departmental events, seminars, and research centers such as the Liverpool Medieval and Renaissance Research Centre and the Eighteenth-Century Worlds Centre will enrich your academic experience within a dynamic intellectual community.
