The MSc Medical Microbiology with Advanced Research program provides you with comprehensive skills and specialized knowledge to pursue a rewarding career across various industries. This course enhances your theoretical understanding and practical laboratory expertise by leveraging the research experience of our faculty. You'll gain proficiency in key areas including: antimicrobial susceptibility testing, analysis of antibiotic resistance genes, microbial identification (using 16SrRNA sequencing and MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry), parasite detection, next-generation sequencing, bacteriophage isolation and purification, antibiotic discovery and characterization, and mammalian cell culture techniques. Our teaching staff includes industry professionals from biopharmaceutical companies, visiting academics from other institutions, and University of Hertfordshire faculty. With state-of-the-art facilities, hands-on laboratory training, and research-driven curriculum, you'll be well-prepared for roles in biopharmaceutical R&D or diverse non-laboratory positions in academia and microbiology sectors.

Graduates can pursue careers in multiple fields such as: medical/pharmaceutical research, clinical trials, public health and epidemiology, academic research, medical writing/science communication, education, or intellectual property law. The program also serves as excellent preparation for advanced research degrees like MRes, MSc by Research, or PhD programs in related disciplines.

Qualification Requirements

An Honours Degree in Biomedical and related sciences with a background in molecular biology, genetics and immunology with a final classification grade of a minimum 60% with evidence of having completed a research project and practical experience in a range of laboratory techniques relevant to the course such as bacterial culturing, DNA extraction, PCR and gel electrophoresis
A qualification in veterinary science, medicine or dentistry, or
A first or second class Honours Degree in disciplines other than those described above but where the applicant, in the opinion of the Programme Leader, would benefit from, and succeed on, the programme
Students will be selected through interview.
In addition, all international students are required to demonstrate an English Language capability of IELTS 7 (with no less than 6.5 in any band) or equivalent qualification.
