The MSc Medical Microbiology with Placement Year provides comprehensive training to prepare you for a successful career across various industries. Through this program, you'll gain both theoretical knowledge and hands-on laboratory experience, drawing from the research strengths of our faculty. Key areas of study include: testing antimicrobial susceptibility, analyzing antibiotic resistance genes, identifying microbes (using 16SrRNA sequencing and MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry), detecting parasites, next-generation sequencing, isolating and purifying bacteriophages, discovering and characterizing antibiotics, and mammalian cell culture techniques. Our teaching staff includes industry professionals from biopharmaceutical companies, visiting academics, and University of Hertfordshire experts. With access to state-of-the-art facilities, a strong focus on practical lab work, and research-led teaching, you'll be well-prepared for roles in biopharmaceutical R&D or various non-laboratory positions in academia and microbiology.
Graduates can pursue diverse career paths such as: medical/pharmaceutical research, clinical trials, public health and epidemiology, academic research, medical writing/science communication, education, or intellectual property law. The program also serves as excellent preparation for further research degrees like MRes, MSc by Research, or PhD programs in related disciplines.
