Our department conducts extensive research across multiple domains including experimental psychology, cognitive neuroscience, linguistics, sensory perception, psychological statistics and methodology, social robotics, and health cognition. We maintain significant expertise in neuroimaging and brain stimulation technologies, with research bridging both foundational and clinical neuroscience. Our team consists of approximately 35 faculty members, 2 distinguished fellows (Marie Curie and Adam Smith recipients), 20 research associates/assistants, and a robust postgraduate community of 60 students encompassing PhD candidates, Master's students, and visiting scholars.
Our faculty actively pursue numerous funded research initiatives, securing major grants from prestigious organizations like the Wellcome Trust, BBSRC, and ESRC. Through varied methodologies and experimental frameworks, our work seeks to deepen knowledge of human behavior, mental processes, and neural mechanisms across different analytical levels.
Research activities are organized within the School of Psychology, the Centre for Social, Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience (cSCAN), and the Centre for Cognitive Neuroimaging (CCNi), which houses cutting-edge functional neuroimaging equipment. Numerous researchers hold joint appointments, connecting the School of Psychology and Neuroscience across two colleges (Science & Engineering, and Medical, Veterinary & Life Sciences), fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and translational research spanning from molecular to systems neuroscience.
