The School of Cancer Sciences is a comprehensive, research-driven institution with international impact. Our work encompasses fundamental cancer biology, translational studies, and clinical research, with particular emphasis on cancer genomics and disease-specific investigations. We aim to produce groundbreaking research that improves patient outcomes while fostering an innovative environment for scientific training and discovery.
As part of a national center of excellence in cancer research, we conduct cutting-edge studies to unravel the molecular mechanisms underlying cancer development. Our mission involves transforming scientific breakthroughs into novel treatments, diagnostic methods, and prognostic tools, advancing promising therapies through preclinical and clinical testing phases.
The School forms a vital part of the Cancer Research UK West of Scotland Cancer Centre. Our 51 research teams operate from state-of-the-art facilities including the Beatson Institute for Cancer Research, Paul OGorman Leukaemia Research Centre, CRUK clinical trials unit (CTU), and Wolfson Wohl Cancer Research Centre. These centers feature advanced technological resources supporting our core research initiatives. Research projects are customized based on the specialties of our principal investigators, offering opportunities in both fundamental and clinical studies. Our methodologies incorporate diverse techniques such as molecular biology, biochemistry, bioinformatics, genetics, cancer modeling, cellular biology (featuring sophisticated in vitro and in vivo imaging), immunology, and comprehensive polyomics approaches (including genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics).
