Our research explores English Language and Linguistics, examining both written and spoken English from medieval periods to modern times.
Glasgow boasts a distinguished global reputation in historical English studies, combining philological, literary-critical, and linguistic traditions with cutting-edge linguistic theory. We are at the forefront of contemporary English language research, employing quantitative analysis of digital corpora alongside qualitative studies across diverse genres to analyze language patterns in modern spoken and written contexts.
Glasgow's renowned expertise in Scots and Scottish English studies has been further strengthened by recent large-scale collaborative initiatives. Our medieval English Language research connects closely with Glasgow's Medieval and Renaissance Studies program, one of the UK's most extensive concentrations in this field. We maintain robust interdisciplinary partnerships with various departments including Psychology, Computer Science, Mathematics, Celtic and Gaelic Studies, and Education, complementing our long-standing ties with English and Scottish Literature. As a global leader in Digital Humanities, Glasgow incorporates significant digital components across many of our research projects.
