The English Language and Linguistics MA program examines English's linguistic characteristics from theoretical, applied, historical, and contemporary viewpoints. This course helps you comprehend and critically assess diverse concepts in English language studies, especially regarding linguistic variations across geographical regions, time periods, communication contexts, and language interactions. You'll develop the analytical skills and scholarly approach needed for independent research.
This MA suits those who've studied English language or linguistics at undergraduate level, or related fields like psychology, philosophy, or TESOL. It's particularly valuable for aspiring researchers or English teachers seeking advanced qualifications and insights into current field developments.
Full-time students complete 180 credits in one year; part-time students typically spread this across two years. The curriculum includes four core modules (including a 60-credit dissertation on English language/linguistics topics) plus two electives. The foundational module, Language and Learning: Description and Analysis, provides essential theoretical and analytical tools for language examination, particularly relevant to English teaching. The Multilingualism and English Worldwide modules investigate linguistic diversity and contact in English and other languages through historical and modern lenses, with many electives complementing this focus. TESOL-related topics are available among the optional modules.
