Discover languages from around the globe, examining their sounds, structures, and societal roles. You'll investigate universal linguistic features while analyzing the importance of their variations. Unlike our MA programs, our MRes degrees provide greater flexibility with fewer structured courses, focusing instead on your dissertation and independent research projects. Applicants must submit a preliminary research proposal, and you'll be paired with a supervisor to assist with module selection and dissertation guidance.
This program is ideal if you wish to deepen your linguistics knowledge while honing advanced research capabilities. Our MRes Linguistics offers customized support for aspiring researchers across all specializations, with access to various subject-specific and research-focused graduate modules.
Throughout the program, you'll cultivate essential professional skills including analytical reasoning, research methodology, quantitative and qualitative data collection, data interpretation, and academic writing. Graduates pursue careers in academia, secondary education, forensic linguistics, publishing, administration, and public sector roles.
We collaborate with the University's Career Services to connect you with internships, work placements, and volunteer positions.
Our Department of Language and Linguistics also provides PhD and MPhil supervision across diverse fields including language acquisition, teaching methodologies, intercultural communication, psycholinguistics, speech pathology, sociolinguistics, and theoretical linguistics.
