Aeronautical engineering focuses on aircraft design, construction, propulsion systems, operational usage, and safety controls. Students engage in hands-on lab work, including jet engine testing and a fifth-year flight-testing course aboard a Saab 340B aircraft. Collaborative group design projects with BAe Systems involve real-world aircraft development, while students utilize cutting-edge facilities from the UK National Wind Tunnel Facility. Final-year students complete a six-month placement in industry, at an overseas university, or within University of Glasgow research labs. The program holds accreditation from the Royal Aeronautical Society and is undergoing reaccreditation with the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.
Industry professionals contribute to aircraft design courses, and industrial site visits are arranged when possible. The school supports student teams in national (IMechE) and international (AIAA) competitions. MEng students can complete projects in Europe or study abroad at partner universities in the USA or Australia during their third year.
Our programs are accredited by the Royal Aeronautical Society, the Institution of Engineering and Technology, and the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, providing pathways toward Chartered Engineer (CEng) or Incorporated Engineer (IEng) status. The MEng program meets the academic requirements for professional engineering registration upon graduation.
