Exploring history means examining how human societies evolve while maintaining certain traditions over time. At Glasgow, we provide an extensive curriculum covering periods from the Middle Ages to contemporary eras. Our instruction is informed by top-tier research in areas including: Scottish, British, European, American and world history, Slavery research, Gender studies, and investigations into warfare, intelligence operations, and genocide
Students can choose from diverse courses spanning medieval to modern periods across different regions. Our program features intimate seminar groups, multiple assessment formats (including practical assignments like policy briefs and online articles), and personalized feedback sessions. The department houses prestigious research hubs focusing on gender history, military studies, slavery research, American culture, and Scottish/Celtic traditions.
The curriculum begins by analyzing historical transformations in Scotland across medieval, early modern, and contemporary periods, then examines medieval Europe's complex relationships with surrounding regions. Students evaluate political, social, economic, and cultural factors that shape societies throughout different eras through a mix of lectures and discussion groups. Later coursework investigates European societal shifts during early modern and modern periods, followed by a global perspective tracking the movement of populations, ideologies, and imperial systems across borders. The program develops essential historical analysis skills to prepare students for advanced studies.
History alumni pursue varied career paths including cultural heritage, education, business consulting, administration, and finance. Recent graduates have secured positions with organizations such as: HarperCollins publishing, Police Scotland, Oxfam charity, Glasgow Museums, and organ manufacturer Stanley.
