Studying French encompasses learning a major European and global language, along with exploring the diverse cultures it has shaped worldwide. Within your French studies, you can specialize in various areas such as French graphic novels, chanson française, travel literature, medieval French history, or modern France.
The School of Modern Languages & Cultures provides degree programs in French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish. You can pursue French, German, Italian, or Spanish as standalone single honors or combine them with other disciplines for a joint degree. Portuguese and Russian are exclusively offered as joint degrees, requiring pairing with another subject. Additionally, Catalan, Mandarin Chinese, Czech, and Polish are available as optional components within your degree.
During your first year, you'll typically enroll in either Beginner-level courses (for those with no prior experience or only National 5/GCSE equivalent) or Non-Beginner courses (for students with recent Higher/A-level grade B qualifications).
