German encompasses learning a major European language and its cultural context. At Glasgow University, we offer diverse teaching approaches covering everything from 18th-century traditions to modern cultural studies. Our program integrates language acquisition with cultural understanding through practical, career-oriented coursework, giving our graduates a competitive edge in the job market. Your first-year curriculum depends on prior German experience. Students with SQA Higher or A-level German (grades A or B) enroll in our level-1 intermediate language and culture classes. Beginners or those with limited experience can take our intensive level-1 foundation course, developing essential reading, writing, and speaking skills. Dual language students complete their year abroad in a country speaking one of their chosen languages, followed by an additional three-month placement in their fourth year to immerse in their second language's culture.
Language graduates pursue careers across various fields such as: media, arts administration, education, civil service fast-tracking, finance, business management, public relations
international diplomacy.
Employers highly appreciate the adaptable skills gained through language degrees. Graduating from our School of Modern Languages & Cultures provides a unique global perspective.
