This academic program explores cinema and television as powerful influences in contemporary culture, shaping both entertainment and education.
The curriculum serves as excellent preparation for diverse roles across media, arts, and cultural sectors. Recent alumni have secured positions including feature film location assistants in Scotland, researchers at the British Film Institute, and internships with Park Circus film distribution.
Our established graduates have built successful careers with prominent organizations like the BBC and STV, working as media professionals, arts administrators, journalists, and academic researchers.
The first two years establish foundational knowledge through theoretical, critical, and historical studies. During Honours years, students can blend core and elective courses for specialized learning, including practical components that deepen media comprehension. Required courses like Screen Analysis and Screen Histories develop analytical skills for film/TV while examining their historical contexts.
Specialized offerings may cover regional cinema (such as postwar Japanese films or Scottish productions), genre studies (including animation, film noir, and melodrama), production techniques (like screenwriting and audio-visual criticism), and thematic explorations (from screen acting to children's programming).
