Celtic Studies offers a unique blend of language learning and exploration of both ancient and contemporary Celtic traditions across Britain and Ireland. Students engage with leading experts to examine the rich heritage of Celtic-speaking communities while mastering one of the British Isles' Celtic languages.
The University maintains exchange programs with Trinity College Dublin and institutions in North America and Australia that specialize in Celtic studies. Alumni have pursued diverse career paths in education, cultural heritage, publishing, music, business, and academic research.
Students who completed Celtic Civilisation coursework in their initial years can opt to learn Scottish Gaelic or pair medieval Celtic history with an ancient Celtic language. The curriculum includes specialized courses on Irish and Scottish Gaelic traditions, Welsh literature, Celtic art, and modern language policies. Advanced students explore focused historical topics like medieval Ireland, the Picts, and northern British tribes while completing an independent research dissertation on a subject of their choice.

Advanced entry
Applicants who achieve exceptional grades in their Advanced Highers, A-levels or International Baccalaureate may be considered for advanced entry, meaning that an Honours degree can be completed in three years instead of the normal four years, or four years for five-year integrated Masters programmes.
