Celtic Studies offers a unique blend of language learning and exploration of both ancient and contemporary Celtic traditions across Britain and Ireland. You'll immerse yourself in the rich heritage of Celtic-speaking communities while being guided by leading experts in the field, with the chance to master one of the British Isles' Celtic tongues.
Our institution maintains vibrant exchange programs with Trinity College Dublin and various universities in North America and Australia that specialize in Celtic studies. Alumni have pursued diverse career paths including education at all levels, cultural heritage roles in museums and government agencies, publishing and literary promotion, musical arts, and business ventures. Many have also advanced to postgraduate research and academic positions.
Students who completed Celtic Civilisation coursework in their initial years can opt to learn Scottish Gaelic or pair medieval Celtic history with an ancient Celtic language. The curriculum also features specialized courses examining particular facets of Celtic culture and literature, covering subjects like early Irish and Scottish Gaelic belief systems, Scottish language policy, Gaelic oral traditions, ancient Gaelic texts, medieval Welsh writings, and Celtic artistic expressions. Advanced students can select from historical courses focusing on medieval Ireland, the Northern Britons, and Pictish civilization. The program culminates with an independent research project, enabling you to investigate a self-selected topic while honing your autonomous research skills.
