Celtic Studies offers a unique blend of language learning and exploration of both medieval and contemporary Celtic cultures across the British Isles. Students engage with Celtic-speaking communities' rich heritage through instruction from leading researchers while mastering one of the region's Celtic languages.
The University maintains vibrant exchange programs with Trinity College Dublin and institutions in North America and Australia that specialize in Celtic studies. Alumni have pursued diverse career paths including education at all levels, cultural heritage roles in museums and government agencies, publishing and literary promotion, musical arts, and entrepreneurial ventures. Many graduates also continue their academic journey through advanced research and teaching positions.
Students who completed Celtic Civilisation coursework in their initial years can opt to learn Scottish Gaelic or pair medieval Celtic history with ancient Celtic language studies. The curriculum features specialized courses covering various cultural and literary themes, from early Irish and Scottish Gaelic belief systems to modern language policies, traditional folklore, ancient texts, Welsh literary traditions, and Celtic artistic expressions. Honors students enjoy additional coursework on historical topics including medieval Ireland, the Northern Britons, and Pictish civilization. The program culminates with an independent research project, enabling students to investigate a self-selected topic while honing their autonomous research skills.
