Glasgow Dental Hospital & School is situated in the heart of the city, offering comprehensive facilities for patient treatment, clinical training for students, and research into dental and oral health conditions. The program covers all facets of clinical dentistry, complemented by instruction in medical sciences, patient care strategies, health education, and foundational biomedical subjects like anatomy, physiology, and microbiology. Students gain theoretical and practical knowledge in core dental disciplines, including restorative dentistry, prosthodontics, and periodontics. Early training includes hands-on experience treating dental caries in simulated clinical environments.
Building on first-year foundations, the curriculum advances with deeper exploration of biomedical sciences, clinical medicine, and patient care techniques. Students also begin direct patient treatment under supervision.
The program further develops expertise in restorative procedures, including performing initial tooth extractions. Clinical rotations in pediatric dentistry are introduced, alongside specialized courses in head and neck anatomy, substance abuse counseling, sedation dentistry preparation, and computer-assisted independent study. Third-year students complete an elective research project with faculty guidance, presented after final examinations.
Advanced clinical training occurs both at the Dental School and community settings, exposing students to all dental specialties. The curriculum includes advanced topics like oral pathology, orthodontic techniques, and comprehensive patient management strategies.
While most graduates enter general practice, career options also include hospital or community dental services. NHS general practice requires completing vocational training (typically one year, sometimes extended to two years) to bridge academic preparation with professional practice requirements.
