Our MPhil/PhD candidates engage in pioneering research within Exeter University's Psychology department. Recognized among the global top 100 for Psychology (QS World University Rankings 2017), we provide advanced facilities, an expanding postgraduate network, and increased research funding - creating the perfect setting for doctoral studies. Students without an Exeter Psychology MSc may need supplementary training, which could include selected MSc modules, though exemptions may apply for previously covered material. This training equips students with essential research skills while fostering connections with fellow PhD candidates. Training requirements are determined in consultation with supervisors and the Postgraduate Research Director at the program's start. Students also benefit from our research seminar series featuring distinguished external experts.
A Psychology PhD from Exeter opens diverse career possibilities. Graduates often pursue academia as postdoctoral researchers or lecturers, while clinical research students frequently continue as clinical psychologists. Some alumni enter the corporate world, joining established firms or launching their own ventures. These career decisions reflect individual interests and skills developed during postgraduate study, with all paths fostering personal growth and enabling meaningful societal contributions.
