Pursuing a PhD offers an intellectually engaging and fulfilling journey, enabling you to explore a legal topic of personal interest. To earn a PhD, your dissertation must present fresh, original perspectives on legal studies, whether by introducing innovative doctrinal or theoretical approaches to the discussed legal matters, or through empirical research that yields new understandings of legal issues. The Exeter Centre for International Law fosters a dynamic academic environment with resident scholars, affiliated members, and visiting experts specializing in international law. Our research covers diverse legal subjects, with particular strengths in international human rights law, armed conflict law, and refugee law. We welcome scholars at all career stages to join our inclusive community and contribute to our events. Our approach recognizes international law not just as an academic discipline but as a practical legal field. Several members bring direct experience in applying international law, and we maintain robust connections with legal practitioners beyond academia—from top legal advisors and international judges to government officials and NGO staff. Additionally, we collaborate closely with experts from related fields, including colleagues at Exeter University's Strategy and Security Institute.
