As part of our four-year MLitSt Creative Writing program, you'll join an interdisciplinary department with a strong reputation, home to active poets, playwrights, novelists, and critics.
Essex boasts a rich legacy of influential writers who have left their mark on literature, from renowned figures like American poets Robert Lowell and Ted Berrigan to modern voices such as mythographer and novelist Dame Marina Warner and Booker Prize laureate Ben Okri.
Our curriculum provides diversity, flexibility, and a unique focus on nurturing your writing talent while offering opportunities to explore complementary subjects within the Department of Literature, Film, and Theatre Studies, including literature, filmmaking, journalism, and drama.

Qualification Requirements

A-levels: AAB, including one essay based subject BTEC: DDD, depending on subject studied - advice on acceptability can be provided IB: 33 points or three Higher Level certificates with 665, including a Higher Level essay based subject grade 5. We are also happy to consider a combination of separate IB Diploma Programmes at both Higher and Standard Level. Exact offer levels will vary depending on the range of subjects being taken at higher and standard level, and the course applied for. Please contact the Undergraduate Admissions Office for more information. We also consider T-levels. IELTS - 6.0 overall with a minimum of 5.5 in each component, TOEFL IBT - 76 overall, with a minimum of 18 in reading, 17 in listening, 20 in speaking and 17 in writing
