Doctoral supervision is available in descriptive and theoretical phonology, syntax, semantics, and morphology, with special focus on cross-linguistic diversity and connections between grammatical domains. Our department's research spans numerous global languages, encompassing African, Latin American, Middle Eastern, and European languages. We particularly welcome fieldwork-driven and community-focused studies on lesser-documented languages, as well as research connecting empirical findings to theoretical frameworks.
Ranked first in the UK for research impact in modern languages and linguistics (Grade Point Average, Research Excellence Framework 2021), our department boasts internationally renowned faculty who lead cutting-edge research in their specialties.
We foster a vibrant research community with regular departmental seminars featuring distinguished guest speakers.
The diverse academic offerings within our Department of Language and Linguistics lead to varied career paths for graduates. Many PhD alumni pursue academic careers in teaching or research. Given the interdisciplinary nature of our linguistics programs, graduates may find opportunities in departments spanning English, linguistics, education, sociology, or cognitive science.
