Psycholinguistics research explores how language is processed and comprehended in real-time, as well as how it's learned by both native and non-native speakers, making it fundamentally interdisciplinary. This field integrates insights and methodologies from theoretical and applied Linguistics alongside Psychology, while also influencing and being shaped by Educational studies. In this joint-department initiative, students receive guidance from co-supervisors representing two of the three participating departments, becoming part of a vibrant interdisciplinary research community spanning all three.
Upon enrolling in the three-year program, each student receives a customized training plan incorporating resources from all three departments. These offerings include psycholinguistic research methodologies, data science training, and various advanced specialized courses. Students gain access to cutting-edge laboratory facilities selected from the extensive resources available across departments, featuring eye-tracking and pupillometry systems, EEG and psychophysiology equipment, advanced individual and group testing tools, focus group monitoring setups, behavioral experiment apparatus, a three-bedroom sleep laboratory with polysomnography, among other specialized resources. Throughout the program, students develop, execute, and document their independent research projects while gaining comprehensive exposure to psycholinguistics through the PsycholinguisticsYork initiative - which features yearly presentation events, guest lectures, and professional networking opportunities. The program also accommodates PhD candidates pursuing publication-based dissertations (comprising series of publishable papers).
Graduates will emerge with sophisticated technical competencies, including expertise in specialized software and advanced data handling techniques. Their training prepares them not only for academic careers but also for diverse professional paths such as artificial intelligence development, language education, speech therapy, and consumer research analytics.
