Our four-year BA in Philosophy and Law (including a foundation year) is designed to help you build subject expertise while enhancing your academic abilities. The foundation year (Year Zero) provides comprehensive preparation for the subsequent three years of undergraduate studies at Essex. For those interested, we offer a five-year option that includes a study abroad opportunity in your fourth year.
Upon completing Year Zero through our Essex Pathways Department, you'll advance to the School of Philosophical, Historical and Interdisciplinary Studies to finish your degree.
The intersection of moral, political, and legal philosophy with law creates rich learning opportunities in both directions. Our program encourages exploration of not just legal systems as they exist, but also how they might ideally function.
Choosing Essex means benefiting from exceptional educational quality. We rank 7th in the UK for philosophy research impact (Grade Point Average, REF2021) and 9th for student satisfaction in philosophy (National Student Survey 2023, English Broad Discipline Institutions).
