You'll explore humanity's most profound inquiries: Does a divine being exist? Is material achievement life's sole purpose? What responsibilities do we hold toward others? How much control do we truly have over our destinies?At Essex, we ground philosophy in real-world existential, social, and political concerns. We highlight philosophy's connections to diverse fields - politics, culture, law, medicine, arts - applying philosophical thinking to pressing societal matters, like debates surrounding mental health policies or end-of-life care decisions.Our curriculum spans from life's ultimate meaning to critiques of capitalism, from ancient philosophical traditions to contemporary European thought, with specialized focus on:Ethical studiesPolitical philosophyReligious philosophyContinental philosophy (including critical theory, phenomenology, and existentialism)We participate in dynamic interdisciplinary research initiatives, collaborating with departments like Political Science, Law, Sociology, Psychoanalysis, and Art History. We facilitate educational growth through study abroad programs at partner institutions worldwide. Our four-year degree option includes a third year abroad or an international placement, mirroring the three-year curriculum structure.Overseas study exposes you to different cultures and languages, enhances your academic perspective, and showcases valuable qualities like adaptability and organizational skills to future employers.Full-year abroad students pay just 15% of standard Essex tuition fees, with no additional charges at the host university.Professional placement optionAlternatively, dedicate your third year to an external placement, gaining industry insights, applying classroom knowledge in practical settings, and discovering potential career directions. Qualification Requirements

A-levels: BBB - BBC or 120 - 112 UCAS tariff points from a minimum of 2 full A-levels, including B in one essay based subject.

BTEC: DDM - DMM or 120 - 112 UCAS tariff points from a minimum of the equivalent of 2 full A-levels. 

Combined qualifications on the UCAS tariff: 120 - 112 UCAS tariff points from a minimum of 2 full A levels or equivalent. 

IB: 30 - 29 points or three Higher Level certificates with 555-554.

IB Career-related Programme: We consider combinations of IB Diploma Programme courses with BTECs or other qualifications. 

QAA-approved Access to HE Diploma: 6 level 3 credits at Distinction and 39 level 3 credits at Merit, depending on subject studied - advice on acceptability can be provided

T-levels: We consider T-levels on a case-by-case basis, depending on subject studied. The offer for most courses is Distinction overall. Depending on the course applied for there may be additional requirements, which may include a specific grade in the Core.

IELTS - 6.0 overall TOEFL IBT - 76 overall, with a minimum of 18 in reading, 17 in listening, 20 in speaking and 17 in writing
