Language forms the foundation of our thinking, social connections, and societies. It enables us to share information, whether arranging a casual meetup, presenting groundbreaking research, or resolving international conflicts. Our program lets you learn up to three languages, selecting from French, German, Italian, and Spanish at beginner or advanced levels, with Portuguese available at intermediate proficiency. Combine these with specialized modules focusing on cultural studies and career-oriented skills. These languages hold significant importance in global business, and we prepare you to achieve near-native fluency, opening doors to international careers with firms seeking linguistic experts.Beyond language proficiency, our curriculum delves into worldwide cultures, historical contexts, and political landscapes, providing deep cultural understanding alongside linguistic ability. Explore diverse subjects such as:International filmTranslation and media adaptationContemporary music trendsVisual arts and historical narrativesWe additionally provide a fully-funded intensive summer course for absolute beginners. If you're globally minded, fascinated by human interaction, and seek a practical, respected degree from a top-tier institution, Essex is your destination.Study abroad optionsOur program features two study abroad pathways. First, you can attend one of our partner universities worldwide, continuing academic studies while immersed in your target languages. Alternatively, work as a language assistant abroad, gaining professional international experience while earning income.Either choice expands your cultural horizons, enhances your academic profile, and proves to employers your adaptability and organizational skills. Full-year abroad students pay just 15% of standard Essex tuition fees, with no additional costs at host institutions.Placement year opportunityYou may opt for a work placement abroad, fully engaging with another culture while developing professional language skills.
