This program provides comprehensive training in modern history and political studies, exploring how these disciplines interconnect. During your first year, you'll take an introductory politics course alongside history modules, continuing to blend both subjects in subsequent years. The curriculum offers diverse elective options from both departments, with the opportunity to focus your final-year dissertation on either political science or historical research. Your historical studies will examine the interplay of ideas, cultures, and economic systems across Western societies over the past two centuries. The program highlights connections between contemporary society - with its emphasis on political freedom, global connectivity, and social values - and historical developments emerging from the 18th and 19th centuries. With a focus on political causation, the course reveals unexpected links between governance and everyday life. You'll analyze political science methodologies to examine both empirical political phenomena and normative questions about ideal political systems. Key topics include: - Democratic governance structures - Dynamics of political influence - Foundational concepts: states, legal systems, conflicts, and political organizations - Communist revolutionary movements across various regions - Cold War causes and global impacts International Study Opportunities We encourage expanding your academic horizons through study abroad programs at partner institutions. Our four-year option includes a year or term overseas (or an international placement) while maintaining the same curriculum as the three-year degree. International study enhances cultural awareness, language skills, and academic perspective while demonstrating adaptability and organizational abilities to future employers. Placement Year Option Upon enrollment, you may choose to incorporate a professional placement year. While students secure their own placements, they receive support from both academic departments and the university's career services. Students undertaking a placement year benefit from reduced tuition fees, paying only 20% of the standard rate during their placement period.
