The University of Essex champions social awareness, questioning the status quo, and grasping broader contexts. We empower students to develop their analytical perspective and examine history from diverse viewpoints, uncovering narratives that might otherwise fade from memory.
Our BA History program invites you to tackle profound inquiries about how political, social, and cultural transformations affect individuals, communities, and regions. Spanning topics from African-American enslavement to Soviet-era Russia, from Essex communities to German witch trials, from medical history to Chinese revolutions, we encourage deep historical exploration to illuminate contemporary issues.
Students enjoy the freedom to select from numerous specialized courses covering both local and global subjects.
Our internationally recognized faculty from across the globe creates a genuinely multicultural learning environment. We facilitate hands-on local history research through our strong partnership with the Essex Record Office, among Britain's finest regional archives.

Beyond gaining historical knowledge and contemporary insights, our history program equips students with transferable skills for post-graduation success. You'll master evaluating complex information, articulating arguments effectively, and balancing independent study with collaborative work.
This prepares graduates for diverse professional paths. Our alumni have succeeded in education, library sciences, cultural heritage, public administration, and municipal governance.
