Our five-year BA in European Studies with Spanish (including a foundation year) is designed to build your subject expertise while enhancing your academic abilities. The foundation year (Year Zero) provides comprehensive preparation in these key areas, setting you up for three subsequent years of undergraduate study at Essex.
Upon successfully completing Year Zero through our Essex Pathways Department, you'll advance to finish your degree with our School of Philosophical, Historical and Interdisciplinary Studies.
Turn on the news or glance at any major newspaper, and you're bound to encounter stories about Europe. The continent's future represents a geopolitical issue of global significance, yet many struggle to grasp the complexities of modern Europe.
You'll explore Europe's economic, legal, and social frameworks alongside its historical roots while gaining insight into its vibrant cultural heritage. European artists, writers, musicians, composers, and filmmakers continue to wield cultural influence that rivals even America's global dominance.
In addition to your European studies coursework, you'll achieve fluency in Spanish. Your fourth year includes immersion in a Spanish-speaking country, deepening your understanding of both Spanish and broader European cultures.
Language shapes our thinking, relationships, and societies. It serves as the vehicle for knowledge exchange - from casual coffee invitations to groundbreaking scientific discoveries to resolving international conflicts.
