Celtic Studies offers a unique blend of language learning and exploration of both ancient and contemporary Celtic traditions across Britain and Ireland. Students can immerse themselves in the rich heritage of Celtic-speaking communities while being guided by leading experts in the field, with the chance to master one of the British Isles' Celtic languages.
The University maintains vibrant exchange programs with Trinity College Dublin and institutions in North America and Australia that specialize in Celtic studies. Alumni have pursued diverse career paths including education at various levels, cultural heritage roles in museums and government agencies, publishing and literary promotion, music industries, and entrepreneurial ventures. Many have also advanced to postgraduate research and academic careers.
Those who completed Celtic Civilisation coursework in their initial years may opt to begin Scottish Gaelic studies or blend medieval Celtic history with learning an ancient Celtic tongue. The program also features specialized courses covering distinct elements of Celtic culture and literature, such as early Irish and Scottish Gaelic belief systems, Scottish language policy, Gaelic oral traditions, ancient Gaelic texts, medieval Welsh writings, and Celtic artistic expressions. Advanced students can select from historical courses focusing on medieval Ireland, the Northern Britons, and Pictish civilization. The curriculum culminates with an independent research project, enabling students to investigate a self-selected topic while honing their autonomous research skills.
