Our BA in English Literature offers a truly international and socially conscious curriculum, featuring diverse modules spanning various regions, traditions, and historical eras. Your studies will encompass everything from seminal works like The Epic of Gilgamesh, Dante, and Ovid to groundbreaking contemporary literature from recent years. You'll explore fundamental questions: How were concepts like love, mortality, and race understood during the Renaissance? What lasting impacts did slavery leave on American literature across different genres? In what ways did suffragette movements alter global literature? Whether examining dystopian novels, Caribbean zombie folklore, or digital-age rights discourse, you'll delve deeply into your passions with guidance from field specialists. The program offers extensive optional modules across specializations including: Renaissance and Early Modern texts 18th-19th century movements like Romanticism, Gothic fiction, and realism 20th-21st century developments including Modernism, science fiction, and postcolonial works Transatlantic and Caribbean literary traditions Experimental, political, and avant-garde writing At Essex, we champion bold, interdisciplinary approaches to literary study—respecting traditions while pushing boundaries. Though our faculty includes Nobel and Oscar winners, we continually innovate. Our curriculum explores diverse formats from travelogues to podcasts, spanning media like films, plays, and periodicals. Modules bridge historical milestones with imagined worlds, from the English Civil War to futuristic narratives. Weekly schedules typically feature one-hour lectures paired with seminars, though formats vary by module. International Opportunities Your learning extends beyond campus through study abroad options at partner institutions. The four-year program includes an optional third year overseas or on international placement, mirroring the three-year curriculum otherwise. Studying abroad cultivates cultural awareness, academic growth, and demonstrates adaptability to future employers. Full-year participants pay just 15% of standard Essex tuition with no fees at host universities. Placement Option Upon enrollment, you may add a placement year. While you'll secure your own position, you'll receive support from departmental advisors and career services. Placement participants pay only 20% of regular tuition for that year.
A-levels: BBB - BBC or 120 - 112 UCAS tariff points from a minimum of 2 full A-levels.
BTEC: DDM - DMM or 120 - 112 UCAS tariff points from a minimum of the equivalent of 2 full A-levels.
Combined qualifications on the UCAS tariff: 120 - 112 UCAS tariff points from a minimum of 2 full A levels or equivalent.
IB: 30 - 29 points or three Higher Level certificates with 555-554.
IB Career-related Programme: We consider combinations of IB Diploma Programme courses with BTECs or other qualifications.
QAA-approved Access to HE Diploma: 6 level 3 credits at Distinction and 39 level 3 credits at Merit, depending on subject studied - advice on acceptability can be provided
T-levels: We consider T-levels on a case-by-case basis, depending on subject studied. The offer for most courses is Distinction overall. Depending on the course applied for there may be additional requirements, which may include a specific grade in the Core.
IELTS - 6.0 overall TOEFL IBT - 76 overall, with a minimum of 18 in reading, 17 in listening, 20 in speaking and 17 in writing
