How has English literature evolved from Shakespeare's era to today? What distinguishes UK literature from works produced in other English-speaking nations? How have social and geographical shifts contributed to the development of new English accents and dialects? Grasping our language deepens self-knowledge, motivating us to examine core aspects of human communication - a pursuit perfectly embodied in literary study. Our program delivers comprehensive training in both linguistic and sociolinguistic dimensions of contemporary English, while enabling exploration of diverse literary styles and critical approaches. This degree allows you to investigate varied subjects such as: English language structure and usage, The connection between language and society, American and Caribbean literary traditions, 15th-17th century English (and European) literature, The craft of science fiction writing. We rank first in the UK for research influence in modern languages and linguistics (Grade Point Average, Research Excellence Framework 2021). International Study Opportunities Your learning journey extends beyond campus boundaries. We facilitate educational expansion through study abroad options at partner institutions worldwide. Our four-year program includes a third year abroad or on international placement, mirroring the three-year curriculum otherwise.
