Our English Literature program offers comprehensive exploration of literary studies, drawing from our faculty's specialized knowledge across diverse fields such as American, Irish, and postcolonial literatures, critical theory, creative writing, and interdisciplinary connections between literature and other disciplines. Students gain privileged access to our exceptional Hunterian and Library collections, featuring notable strengths in 18th- and 19th-century works, travel literature, illuminated manuscripts, and important single-author archives.
The curriculum begins with poetry studies before progressing to narrative prose. Throughout the program, students cultivate essential skills in critical analysis, creative composition, and literary argumentation while discovering how performance and oral interpretation enrich textual understanding. Both courses incorporate varied texts spanning different historical periods and cultural contexts, with additional opportunities to hone creative writing abilities in poetry and fiction.
