Our BA in English Literature takes a genuinely international and socially conscious approach, providing diverse module options spanning various regions, cultures, and historical eras. Your studies will encompass everything from cornerstone works like The Epic of Gilgamesh, Dante, and Ovid to cutting-edge contemporary literature from recent years.
At Essex, we champion bold, thought-provoking, and cross-disciplinary methods in literary studies. While we acknowledge traditional frameworks, we're not constrained by them. Though our faculty includes Nobel and Oscar laureates, we continually strive for excellence.

In our Department, you can explore modules covering multiple genres - from travel narratives to podcasts to memoirs - while working across various media formats including printed works, periodicals, theatrical productions, and cinema. Our curriculum bridges significant historical milestones and social movements worldwide while also investigating the imaginative realms literature has created, from the English Civil War to dystopian fiction and film.

Qualification Requirements

A-levels: BBB - BBC or 120 – 112 UCAS tariff points from a minimum of 2 full A-levels including B in one essay based subject. BTEC: DDM – DMM or 120 – 112 UCAS tariff points from a minimum of the equivalent of 2 full A-levels. Other qualifications that hold UCAS tariff points, and combined qualifications: 120 – 112 UCAS tariff points from a minimum of 2 full A levels or equivalent including B in one essay based subject. IB: 30 - 29 points or three Higher Level certificates with 555-554. Either must include a higher essay based subject at grade 5 We are also happy to consider a combination of separate IB Diploma Programme courses (formerly certificates) at both Higher and Standard Level. Exact offer levels will vary depending on the range of subjects being taken at higher and standard level, and the course applied for. IELTS- 6.0 overall with a minimum of 5.5 in each component TOEFL IBT- 76 overall, with a minimum of 18 in reading, 17 in listening, 20 in speaking and 17 in writing
