What range of sounds exist across human languages? Which of these sounds does English employ to build words? How does English combine words to create meaningful sentences, and do other languages follow similar patterns? How do societal influences shape our speech? What drives the evolution of various English dialects? These are among the key questions explored in this course. Language plays a vital role in all human interactions, from international diplomacy to medical consultations to casual café chats. By studying language, you'll gain insights into the essence of human social behavior. Introductory modules in your first two years will equip you with skills to analyze linguistic sound systems, word formation, sentence structure, meaning, and language usage, applying this knowledge specifically to English. This foundation enables you to specialize in areas like: Phonetics, Global English Varieties, Cognitive Linguistics, Social Discourse Analysis, Professional Communication, and Media Language Studies. Our department ranks first in the UK for research impact in modern languages and linguistics (Research Excellence Framework 2021). You'll explore diverse linguistic approaches, from structural to applied and experimental linguistics. If you seek global perspectives, have a passion for human communication, and desire a practical degree from a top-tier department, Essex welcomes you. Global Opportunities Your learning extends beyond campus. We facilitate academic growth through study abroad programs at partner institutions. Our four-year degree option includes a third year abroad or on an international placement, mirroring the three-year curriculum otherwise. Studying overseas enriches your cultural and linguistic understanding, broadens your academic horizons, and showcases adaptability to future employers. Full-year abroad students pay just 15% of standard Essex tuition, with no fees to the host university. Professional Placements A placement year offers valuable industry experience, enhancing your employability and professional network. While you secure your own placement, you'll receive departmental and dedicated placement team support. Placement students pay only 20% of their regular Essex tuition for that year.
